How It Works?
User Input:
When you enter a word or term into the search box and click the Search button, the tool begins by capturing your input.Building the API Request:
The tool uses JavaScript to dynamically construct a URL for the MediaWiki API. It incorporates a variety of advanced parameters (such asaction=query
,format=json
,exintro
,explaintext
,piprop
, andpithumbsize
) to fetch a plain-text extract of the page along with a thumbnail image (if available).Fetching and Processing Data:
Once the URL is constructed, the tool sends a request to the MediaWiki API. When the API responds, the tool parses the returned JSON data. It extracts the definition text, and if a thumbnail image is provided, it extracts the image URL as well.Displaying the Results:
- Definition & Image: The retrieved definition is displayed in a dedicated section along with the image (if available).
- Raw JSON Output: For transparency and for developers who wish to inspect the complete API response, the raw JSON data is shown at the bottom of the tool.
- Calculation Guide: A detailed list of all the API parameters used in the request is provided below the raw JSON output, offering insight into how the result was calculated.
Additional Functionalities:
The tool includes extra action buttons that allow you to:- Copy the Result: Quickly copy the definition (and image URL, if available) to your clipboard.
- Search on Google: Open a new tab to perform a Google search for your query.
- Search on Wikipedia: Open a new tab to search for the term directly on Wikipedia.
Reset Function:
If you want to start over, the Reset button clears the input field and all displayed results, preparing the tool for a new search.
This streamlined process ensures that you receive a clear and concise definition along with additional context, making the Advanced Dictionary Tool both informative and easy to use.
